By richclydesdale on 1/15/2008 on richclydesdale's blog I came down with pneumonia in October. I just got the last bit of yuk out of my lungs in the past few weeks. I feel significantly better. I have my strength back, but what aerobic ability I did build up from this past year's riding season seems to be gone...if not a little worse than I started with. I read that fully recovering from pneumonia can take up to a year. So this past Sunday I went for a ride with my two riding buddies. We had a short urban ride, only about 3 miles, but it was about 45 degrees. I felt like I had an ice-cream headache like never before. My ears were so cold, I couldn't feel them. The back of my head was numb. At no point did I ever feel dizzy, weak, nausious, or anything that would indicate a heart problem or anything like that. Just cold...the only thing I had on my head was my trusty $8 Wal-Mart "Bell" helmet. The rest of my body was clad with gloves, a tee-shirt, and a long-sleeved Comubia shirt over that and on the southern half were my cargo shorts. The strange thing was that the rest of me was fine...in fact quite comfortable, but my head! WOW! It was killing me by the time we got back. Overcoming the cold is going to be a challenge. So I guess I'm looking for some input here: What do you adorn your gord with when you ride in the cold?

Adorn the Gord! |

Do you have a ski helmet? Those are usually padded nicely and keep your head warm without wearing a hat too. I can't imagine why you couldn't use that in place of your normal bike helmet on cold days. It wouldn't even look odd, since many ski helmets are styled similarly to bike helmets. Good luck! |

You can also get a toque (sorry, I'm Canadian) sort of thing from a lot of bike shops (maybe not as easily down there) that you can wear under your helmet. It's like a black synthetic condom for the top of your head. Covers your ears and head, but still let's a bit of breathing and wicking. It looks ridiculous without a helmet on, but with the helmet, it's hardly noticeable, and keeps you very warm in the moderate cold that you describe. Personally, I wear a thick cotton toque (pronounced Tuke like Duke with a T up here in Canada), which prevents me from wearing a helmet, which is stupid, but it's either that or I lose my ears on a really cold ride. Try finding a hat like I describe, I think it will be perfect for what you need. |
