Darkness Approaches

By BrandonST on 9/27/2007 on BrandonST's blog

Well, that time is almost upon us. The days are slowly shortening, and will soon be lost, spent looking out from a soul-less cubicle, through a dingy window.

I have recently started a new job, one that doesn't allow for much flexibility, which means, it doesn't allow for much riding...I haven't been out in weeks, and it's killing me! Within a few weeks, I will head to work in the dark, and head home in the dark; what a depressing thought.

Living up in Canada has its advantages: endless trails, beautiful scenery, great beer, but then winter hits, and all those things are forgotten. The winter weight starts to pack itself on, and the couch cushions have seen more ass than a proctologist. Depression sets in.

Sure, snowboarding takes up some of the slack, but it's just not the same, and you usually don't have to pay $60 for a day of waiting in line on a bike unless you're hitting the hills. There's a freedom that comes with an all day back-country ride that the blistering winter cold seems to freeze for an eternity. Sure, there's winter riding, but with as much snow as we get up here, it's sometimes not an option.

So, now I'm stuck in mountain biking's version of limbo, just waiting for the thaw, or that unusually warm day when I can escape with my trusty bike. Until then, I'll just sit here, staring out the office window, and daydream the last of the light away.

I miss my bike.
