Is your pre-ride meal full of sugar or sauce?

By walker on 6/28/2006 on walker's blog
Is this your type of pre ride?

The other day I was at a race. My friend and I talked about our mornings at that point. He said he enjoyed a good breakfast at such and such place. I said, oh, you must have had a good granola snack, like me. He looked at me with a sadness and said, no, actually, before a race I eat bacon and eggs. I was surprised to hear this considering our race was a 30-mile XC race. If it was a hundred-mile epic, I'd go for a side of tabasco sauce, as well.

As for me, I hit up the carbs. I love granola. However, after looking into pre-ride or pre-race meals further, I've found that a lot of cyclists eat a large breakfast. I remember seeing a special from the Tour de France on the Outdoor Life Network. There was Lance Armstrong eating eggs and toast. Lance Armstrong eats eggs and toast?

So, what's your favorite meal like? I assume the meal before a ride IS the best. Are you a sugar person or a protein person? Do you have any tips for us regarding our meal choice? What's the scoop on your two scoops?

I actually do the same as Lance and have eggs on toast. I have a Rooibos or Green tea and finish it off with a tablespoon of honey. Then I ride.

Oooh, the famous Rooibos tea. I like that stuff too. I also drink Yerba Mate. Have you tried it? Good drink for good health.

For a morning ride, since I don't have much time between waking and riding, I stick with my usual of a toasted bagel with peanut butter, and wash all that down with a milk & protein shake.

Seems to work for me, and doesn't threaten to come back up mid ride, which is always a plus.

Yes Walker, I also drink Yerba Mate. I like to ice it in the summer too. Very refreshing.
I try to stay away from Java - although I find myself sometimes having a pre-ride coffee - "Wobbling Emperor" ( a light roast - more caffine ) - before our after work rides as this tends to perk me up.

Hey Walker, I don't know where you get your 'teas' from but - this is a great place to pick up organic Rooibos and Yerba Mate.

This is a good site! Thanks for the information.

In regards to your previous post, I totally agree with you! Yerba Mate is like the cat's paw of morning drinks. It gets you amped without letting you de-amp. I like the taste, too. There is something very spiritual about Yerba, as well. I'm happy to see I'm in good company!

PS: I drink coffee, before rides, as well. The caffeine bolt is very powerful and can't be avoided.
