By walker on 2/26/2007 on walker's blog It is a rare treat to find a new mountain biking area, but then again, I'm pretty rare! On the high desert plateaus near central New Mexico there lies an incredible mountain biking gem. This area is called White Mesa. If you're looking for sandstone ridge riding (and who isn't?), then look no further than this area. One of my favorite users, Pumpkin Pants, and I went to this area expecting to discover some lame nature trail, but instead we were shocked to find a whole network of trails and desert dirt roads. Unfortunately, we weren't able to find all the secret goodies (mechanical problems and the lack of daylight), but what we did find was amazing. Be sure to check out the pictures. I should also mention that we found some amazing Mexican food in Cuba. Brunno's EXCELLENT Mexican food was just a hop, skip and a jump away from White Mesa. If you're in the area, be sure to get your grub on for cheap at Brunno's. I'm curious, have any of you found a new area? I mean, have you stumbled upon a mountain biking area that is so new that the tire marks are hard to see? What was it like? Did you feel like an adventurer? Did you tell anyone? Post a comment and let our readers know what your secret/new area is all about? |
New mountain bike area: White Mesa

This trail looks sweet....my buddy refers to it as "Fruitaesque" (refering to Fruita CO). Do you have trail directions (GPS coords are fine) Thanks for sharing. |

No GPS coords, but it is way easy to find. Drive Northwest on 550 out of New Mexico for about 50 minutes. Keep looking left and you'll see a sign that says "White Mesa bike trails". Pull in. Go straight - not uphill. Drive for a while until you see a VERY obvious parking area. Super simple... You're friend is right. Very much like the bookcliffs. However, not even close to the real Fruita goods on the Kokopelli side. My $.02. Walker T Off the road, on the mind... |
