It has already been nearly a week since the 24 Hours of Moab and I feel as through there is so much more to blog about it. The race may be over, but the spirit still remains. And with that thought I'll keep rambling on about my experience there.
I have heard from others that "Support is your fifth teammate."
I cannot agree with that enough.
Some teams we camped around had cooks, mechanics, massage therapists, etc... At times I almost jumped camp and tried to make friends with our neighbors, but quickly came to my senses and realized there was no need to. We may not have had the glamor of other support crews, but we had one of the best ladies who gave every bit of her effort to help our team succeed.
Nancy, the wife of one of my teammates, stayed awake the entire 24 hours in support of my team. We men were in charge of cleaning our bikes and getting anything we needed for after the ride ready (i.e. packing a warm jacket and filling a water bottle with a recovery drink), but Nancy picked up the rest.
Nancy made sure we had warm food to eat, warm water to drink during the wee hours of the morning, cheered each of us on as we left the transition tent, and offered a warm smile and pat on the back after each of us finished our ride. She kept us organized, checked the real time scoring on the computer, and did the math so each of us knew the schedule of when we needed to be ready to ride again. It was nothing short of amazing!
Without her help we would have been a lost group of guys. I have no doubt.
Thanks, Nancy!!!
