By walker on 6/12/2007 on walker's blog The start of a new trail is the ultimate unknown. A map, a friend who's been on the trail and a website like yourmtb.com will help you, but it is the first pedal stroke that really counts. Your journey on to the trail and in to the unknown is all that we really have. Preparing for a big-long-epic ride is similar to business strategy and your personal life - it is all about the journey AND YOU NEVER "get there". Think about the last time you were at a race. You're standing in the starting group, you haven't pre-ridden the course and you're asking about the trail. One guy turns to you and says, "It is a tough one, straight up for 2000 feet." Another racer says, "The downhill is KILLER. Get ready to play!" You also know the race is 25 miles long, but that's it. So what you do know counts, but what you don't know is the fun part. The length of the trail is 25-miles. Think of this as what you want to accomplish. In business, we might say this is the company goal. It might be a task you have to complete. The length, in your personal life, might also be considered a hard decision you have to make about a family member. You have a goal! Now, your next thought should be I have this goal and what do I need to do to experience it. In our examples earlier, a map is like a product roadmap, written business strategy or plan to help a relative. The racers, or the trail riders you bump into remind me of friends or advisors. What they say matters, but no one can truly define the bigger picture for you. It takes gusto and a willingness to commit to the journey. GET DEEP - continue the conversation, post a comment about how you committed to something bigger. Did you have all the information? Tell us about your journey? The Dr. is here... |
