Trail Access: Is Your Trail Threatened?

By walker on 2/17/2008 on walker's blog

Your favorite trail could be closed next year! Yep, here I go with another post about the potential closure of trails in the coming year. Why is this such a big deal? Well, once again for your education, the Forest Service is looking closely at how they manage recreation in most national forests. Already some folks are up in arms about the government doing reviews. According to the Montrose Press, a local Colorado paper, Colorado Wild is one of five plaintiffs in a recent lawsuit against
federal agencies, including the Forest Service and Bureau of Land
Management, for approving the Northern San Juan Basin Coalbed Methane
Project. But it isn't just Colorado Wild; recreationists are also making their voices heard!

In Durango, Colorado, we are fuming! Just two weeks ago a meeting was held to discuss reactions to the Dec. 14 release of a major update to the forest plan for
the San Juan National Forest. The draft plan recommends designating Hermosa Creek as a wilderness area, a distinction
that allows hiking, camping, skiing, horseback riding and myriad other activities - but not mountain biking. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Mountain bikers, conservationists and recreationists, in general, are having trouble keeping their reactions are bay. For example, I've posted about 100 blogs speaking to this very subject. But more action is needed...

How can you save your trails:

1. Go to www.imba.com and review the IMBA alert archives. Is your trail threatened?

2. Take a look at the latest management plan ruling. What do you think?

3. Take action by writing your congress person here!

Take action and let's save our trails!!!
