Violent drivers: are you experienced?

By walker on 12/8/2006 on walker's blog

I was hit by a mini van. It was a crazy experience. At the tender young age of 12, I was riding my bike on the wrong side of the road. It was me riding my bike with my mouth open when, all of a sudden, I turned a corner and met by the front end of a mini van. It was in the news.

The man driving the car didn't have it OUT for me or anything like that, but I did find a story about people who do... Have it out for people on bicycles...

They want to HIT CYCLISTS...

According to the Bicycle News Wire, a radio talk show host on WFLA-AM 970 in Tampa, Florida, has it out for cyclists. Mr. Jeff Fisher, one of the DJs, said that he'd like to hit cyclists with his side-view mirrors.

The station responded with a letter stating how sorry they were that Mr. Fisher made those comments after a few large independent bicycle shops responded with letters of concern. Ah, the power of the pen.

My question is who has had a bad experience with a driver? Who has been hit by a car and who has a story to tell?

A friend of mine got hit by a driver, when he was riding back home from work as a teenager. The driver backed up after stopping, but then he proceeded to take off, possibly leaving him for dead.

He had a broken leg. He told me he yelled so hard in pain, he had sores on the corners of his mouth!

His father found him on the side of the road, after looking for him, since he was late coming home.

MY coach got right into a minivan too. But he had nothing...just scratched the car and got a guy yelling after him :)
The car was more damaged then him.

well... I have a sorta funny one.. in a way... Me and a friend of mine used to ride road bikes ..in a local state park. (classic old single speed... with banana seats, anyone here old enough to have a banana seat?)

He had this overly large black lab looking big mutt mixed thing that we used to bring and the dog would kinda run along with us.. or actually run in front of us most of the time. big fast dog....

anyway.. after a short ride we were headed back to the parking lot.. dog ahead of us... when this Subaru was pulling out... he stopped politely for us... but the Dog was looking back at us with the "come on you slow humans... let's get moving" look...well next thing ya know, the dog ran full bore into the door of the 2 WEEK OLD CAR!!!...
Plummet (the Dog) got right up,though a little shaken. But the guys door was so badly dented that he couldn't open it... the edge was binding up on the front fender seam... it was SOOOO funny. The driver was a little PO'ed but even he sorta laughed about it after my friend stated right off he'd pay for the damages.... "damn I got a cheap car" he said after exchanging address and Phone #'s to get it fixed.

My friend stopped laughing the next week when he got the bill... I think it was like $700 or something. Oh my...on of the funniest thing I've ever seen.

PS.. the dog got the Name, "plummet" because even as a puppy when hiking with us he never hesatated at cliffs or steap trails... he just "plummeted" on down without a care!!!! crazy dog!! not to bright!!!

You guys might find this link interesting and alarming. There are some stats on this page of local bike accidents in my area, and a note about a trend that echoes my past post above...drivers leaving the scene!
