Hello from Frederick

Hey, I'm new to this site.  I guess I'd call myself an itermediate
rider.  My 18 year old son and I make biking our weekend get
aways.  Favorite trails are Hall Ranch in Lyons, Co and Heil Ranch
in Boulder.

Pixie Mate Post of the Week - Trail champion!

By Contests on 10/25/2007 in contests

This week's Post of the Week winner didn't even have to post to YourMTB.com to win! It's mtbmike, a.k.a. Mike Barrow, a.k.a. president of the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance (Colorado).

Why did he win? For this heartwarming photo (posted by YourMTB.com publisher Steve Outing) of Mike ripping up a "No Bikes Allowed" sign on Boulder's Flatirons Vista/Dowdy Draw trail. Nope, he's not vandalizing; Mike got the honor after a trail work day, after which the trail was opened to bikes for the first time.

Mike and his BMA colleagues and volunteers are a big part of the reason that the trail restriction was lifted. And the group has been having success getting more new trails for mountain bikers in Boulder County.

We think Mike deserves an award, so he gets Post of the Week, which includes a great gift pack from Pixie Mate (which just happens to be a Boulder-based company).

What have you done to deserve Post of the Week? Post a great picture, blog or video, and next week you could win!

A trail opens to bikes in Boulder!

A trail opens to bikes in Boulder!

I grabbed this photo from the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance. Wanted to share it because it's historic for historically MTB-unfriendly Boulder. That's BMA president Mike Barrow ripping up a "No Bikes" sign that was at the trailhead for Dowdy Draw/Flatirons Vista. A group of volunteers did a trail work day recently, and after they were done the trail was open to mountain bikes.

Out & Back
Length
5.5 miles (8.8km)
Total ascent
8,409 ft (2,564 m)
Description
A nice quick ride to a look out (2.7 miles) Turn back around and zip back to your car. The descent is fun and this trail is a nice introductory for new riders. (or if you want quick ride) Get to this trail by taking Baseline exit. Baseline eventually turns into Flagstaff Road. CLIMB UP (and probably past a ton of roadies) for about 4 miles. After about 1.5 miles of descending look for a well marked trailhead on your RIGHT. If you get to the Walker Ranch loop you have gone too far.

A good ride that is close to Boulder, CO. Ride counter clockwise which will allow you to start with a quick decent. Good climbs, good descents with nothing too technical. Use the GPS file to check out the elevation profile. Get to this trail by taking Baseline exit. Baseline eventually turns into Flagstaff Road. CLIMB UP (and probably past a ton of roadies) for about 4 miles. After about 2 miles of descending look for a well marked trailhead on your LEFT. DON"T MISTAKE the Meyers Homestead Trailhead (see my other posts for that GPS file) which is about .5 miles before Walker Ranch trailhead and located on the right.

Really nice trail. Scenic views of Longs Peak on the lollipop loop; nice technical on the way down. This is one of the close-in mountain trails that dries out quickly, so you can ride it when other mountain trails are still clogged with snow.

This is the loop we do when everything else is still covered in snow or too muddy, since it dries out fast thanks to southern exposure. Easy trail. Climb up to a loop. ... Easy trail, but pretty rocky, so I tagged it as intermediate; beginners might find it challenging because of that.

Trail building in Boulder County

Trail building in Boulder County

Whenever there's new trail to ride in Boulder County (Colorado), that's a big deal. In this mountain bike unfriendly county -- compared to other neighboring counties where more trails are open to MTBers -- things are starting to loosen up a bit, in large part due to the lobbying efforts of the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance. This photo was taken yesterday at a volunteer trail-building event at Heil Valley Ranch, where we were building a new loop to be called the Wild Turkey Trail.
