A bike race at the North Pole: Sign up now

Do biking and the North Pole mix?

What should we call this? Is it cyclo-cross? A mountain bike race? It's certainly not a road race. Definitely call it historic.

I just learned that you can now sign up for a 2008 bike race at the North Pole. It will happen in April 2008, and participating racers will do 26.2 miles on a loop course at the geographic North Pole.

This will not be the first bike race at the pole, but maybe you still could call it that. The deal is that Richard Donovan, who organizes the annual North Pole Marathon for runners, is taking seven bikes and bikers to the pole this April, where they'll do a trial bike race on the same course as the runners and for the same length -- to see if this is feasible.

My first race

By cycliste on 11/30/2006 on cycliste's blog
Picture took on this day !

Well I'm gonna tell you in details my first race in mtb. Hope you'll enjoy it and if not well.... sorry :P It was on May 14 th 2006. When they called my category on the start/finish line I started to stress. The guy started to talk about what to do like : ''You have to let everyone passing you if they ask, you have to tell on which side your going when you're passing someone ...'' things like that. After he said 30 seconds remaining. Then I got my pulse getting very high. ''15 seconds''! ''GO!!!!'' And then...just the noise of me breathing hard in the hill. On my first 2 laps I was not so bad but at the third lap I just missed liquid and then...bonk!! I couldn't pedal to get higher than 15 km/h (don't know in mph).

I finally did it, I'm racing for the first time!

Be there.

Well, after a good few years of riding I have to say racing has never appealed to me, probably due to the bad experience I got when I once entered a Moto x race. The other thing that didn't help was I hated the race organiser where I used to live and refused to pay him a penny. I also just prefer the relaxed atmosphere and fun of freeriding.

Then the other day I was surfing the bike sites as usual when I noticed a front page ad for a downhill race of a different kind, a street race like the Red Bull Lisboa downtown. This type of race has appealed to me for a long time but there's very few like it, infact there's never been anything like it in the UK. So I found out a little more information, a set of 80 steps, cobbled alley ways, Extreme sports channel and Ex medics, lots of spectators lining the course then the final straw, the company I used to work for are sponsoring the whole event....without even thinking I entered, then the realisation of what I'd just done hit home, in at the deep end, I have a tendancy for throwing myself in at the deep end, usually with my speedo's wedgied up as far as my nose.

nant y arian race

By weeman on 7/19/2006 on weeman's blog

on the 6 august 2006 there will be an mtb race in nant y arian, wales, united kingdom. this is the first race of this type to be held in ceredigion. The event incorporates the Welsh Schools Mountain Bike Championships and is supported by the British Schools Cycling Association. This is the first time that such an event has been held in Ceredigion having been always based in South Wales in the past. We hope that you will be able to bring the event to the attention of children in the County. This is an ideal opportunity for children to improve their cycling and get more confident with their bike handling skills. The event is being generously sponsored by Summit Cycles with support from Continental Tyres (UK) and the Forestry Commission.
