![]() By docofeagles on 4/10/2008 I am looking at a 2008 Haro Flightline Two at my LBS and it is priced at 389.00. Good? Bad? I gave it a test ride while I was there and I was amazed at the difference between it and my Wal-Mart Next MTB I have now. Just looking for some expert advice, being that I am a somewhat newbie to the sport. http://harobikes.com/mtb/bikes/flightline_two.php

Doc, You're going to find that no matter how cheap the bike is at your local bike shop, it will still be leaps and bounds better. This bike will definitely be better than your Walmart Next bike. This is a fairly good entry point bike, and should last you a few seasons more than your department store bike. I was going to go into some of the components that may be below par, but then I have to remember you're very new, and coming from a budget bike. You should definitely notice a different in quality and feel. You will notice that it's the exact same frame as the Flightline expert, so the frame will be of a fairly good quality. I may consider going up to the "Sport" version. With that, you will be getting extra travel in the fork (100mm as opposed to the 75mm), and going to disc brakes. Although, since you're not used to disc brakes, you may want to stay away, since you will never go back to pull brakes again! The fork will be the big thing here though, you will be a softer ride, and if you're a heavier rider, you may bottom out on the smaller fork. For casual riding, the Flightline Two would be just fine though. One of the biggest things is to test drive the bike. And not just around the bike shop. Take it out for a good run if they will let you. Nothing hardcore, just a good amount of time to get a feel for the bike. And make sure they size it for you. There are some good sites out there to help you size yourself (I think there is a rule of thumb like: take your inseam, subtract 12" or something like that, but I can't remember). Hope that helps. Are there any other brands at your local shop? Maybe some of the forum members can recommend other models. |

I agree with Brandon. I started out with a cheaper bike too, probably close to the "Flightline One" in specs. If I did it again, I'd probably get something like this instead. I'm not sure if the members will admit it, but I'm guessing we all did at one point. I'm sure you won't regret this purchase, and if you get a better bike later on, you'll appreciate it that much more. I am riding a better bike now, and use the older one for winter riding, or when the trails are wetter. You could also sell it if you decide to move up later. No problem Doc, welcome to the world of MTB! It's a great place to be! And yeah, I started on a pretty cheap bike, something very similar to the Flightline Two that you are looking at. I got a few really good years out of it, until I got more aggressive on the bike, then upgraded. You will really appreciate the difference as you upgrade your bikes. Let us know if you have any other questions, we're glad to help convert more people! Brandon |
