Yeah so if you want to get more air on dirt jumps your basically going to pull off the lip as hard as you can if it is a steep lip (my favorite) it is going to reduce your speed so charge at it just a little fast it's kind of a technique used on spines you pull up as hard as you can up and over and youll just be shot straight up so you don't go any where so it will most likely reduce your speed depending on the lip of the jump. so go at go at it and BOOST IT! as i like to say.

Gdizzle25 makes aome great points here. I'd say go with confidence. Over the weekend, I raced in Telluride. As an XC rider, I'm always looking for opportunities to catch air. Sure, my bike isn't close to 4 or 5 inches of travel, but I can pull hard lines without the suspension. I hit a good size jump during the downhill section. I watched as other riders skipped over the line. I rode up to it with confidence, goosed it and pulled back to fulfill my air requirements...

I keep getting sideways in the air and come down all crossed up or off balance. It's just not as easy with an XC bike due to the geometry. I used to be decent with a BMX bike but the longer the stem the more the bars seem to turn in the air for me. I'm still working on it. I think confidence is also a major part. Also, getting used to compressing the front fork take some practice!

what i do is lower my seat stem all the way down, then i pick a good speed for the size of jump pull up and lean back and right after you leave the ground level your self out so you won't fall on your ass when you land. another tip is try on little jumps really fast and progress up on diffrent size jumps.

Best is to start small... perfect them, then move up in size. I am currently teaching myself good jumping practices. One of the first large jumps for me was a tabletop approx. 8ft. tall and 15ft. to the landing. That was way to big, but luckly since it was a tabletop, I was not worried about under-shooting the landing. Next I tried a tabletop less than half the size and have no problem with that. I am going to work on this size for a while and as I progress Ill move up in size for some sick air.

A few good tips:
Keep your shoulders parallel with the ground!!!
Look forward NOT down
Make sure your bars are straight when landing
Make sure you have good foot placement, and good sticky pedals help too.

Hope this helps!

Billy... that sounds pretty good. It's not really the point that you have to max out a jump before progressing to a new one, you just have to be comfortable doing it. If you feel completely comfortable hitting the 1.5' jump and can stick it 100%, then go for the next size.

Just for fun, you should check out wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheelie.

Wheelies are all about momentum and balance. Build momentum by pedaling in a not so tough gear and lift up on the handlebars. Start small and stay near a grassy field - trust me on this one.

Keep after it. Practice makes perfect...

I was wondering, when you land from about 4-6 ft in the air onto flat dirt, is it best to land with both tires at same time, back first, front first, etc. I have a hard tail, so im not sure. Ive tried both ways. I feel comfortable in the air, but i dont know how im landing. Thanks

Phil says:

mtb 114 definatly not good to land front tire first try to get both at same time or back first and flow into it
