By KonaRider666 on 9/18/2007 I have a 96 Kona and have been rolling w/ a LX bottom bracket. It's the square tapered type. I wanted to upgrade to a Race Face Evolve XC X-Type Crankset with integrated bottom bracket found here. http://www.pricepoint.com/detail/13970-100_RACEX5-3-Parts-56-Cranks/Bolt... Will it fit? Sounds stupid, but it looks the same. If not, where can I find a set of cranks to replace my bent to hell old LX ones that fit the tapered square bb?
Thanks! |

Bottom bracket upgrade? |
cory scott says:
pretty sure as long as you're buying the crank set and the BB it should fit. |

I only ask because the gentleman @ Pricepoint that emailed me told me I had to replace it with another square taper crank set. I don't think he understood I wanted to replace the bb and cranks all together. I can always return it to pricepoint if it doesn't fit I guess. Thanks Cory!! |

two things you need to consider when getting a BB are shell diameter -- almost always 68mm or 73mm -- and spindle length -- the length of the axle. (other factors such as thread pattern, etc. have largely been standardized on modern bikes) DOUBLE CHECK ME ON THIS, but i believe that the integrated cranks generally only have one spindle length, and chainline is adjusted through the use of spacers when necessary. that leaves the shell diameter. if you remove the old one, it should be stamped or written with the size. kona should also have this info on their website. or check out sheldon brown's database: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/bbsize.html . bottom line -- get the new crank set-up. it should work fine, and you'll be amazed by the improved performance. |

Oh ya! It fit!!!! My bike is like a totally different animal! I could feel the difference immediately when I rolled out of the garage onto the street. It was just coming off the ground and when I hopped a curb I took the seat right up the ass cuz the bike is so lite now! I tore a tire open right away on some loose rocks I was blowing through. Luckily I wasn't far from home AND I had a new set of rubbers waiting for me! After throwing on the new set I went out and beat my bike for a good four hours! My bike hasn't felt this good since it was new. I really can't believe the improvement. If only it were full suspension with disc! KonaRider666 |
