Comfortable seats for 45/M butt?

By allaboutdatiki on 8/7/2006

The standard seat on my Trek isn't bad, but it isn't great, either. I'd like to upgrade to a really comfortable seat to lessen the pain so I can endure longer rides.

Here's the deal ... I'm not crazy@ss hardcore. All of my riding is on clay dirt, sand, and gravel trails ... along with paved trails and roads. (Our town has built a fairly extensive trail system. It's less than a five minute ride down the road from our place in either direction to the first trailheads.)

I can't tell you the model # of the Trek ... 'cause my kid borrowed it for the afternoon. The bike is fairly mild and only has front suspension.

Are you looking for something sporty yet comfortable? The higher end Terry's are very nice but a little pricey. They actually have one called "Chubby Cheeks" that looks like a barkolounger. Above that, anything with the gel is going to help. Check out www.mtbr.com for seat reviews.

Thanks for the pointer! The Chubby Cheeks looks to be a little much, but aptly named. The Liberator Y Gel or Cite Y Gel look like they might fit the bill. Prices don't seem that bad, considering.

One and a half weeks later ... I ended up going with a Terry Liberator Y Gel. Only had time for a quick spin around the block after I bolted it on this afternoon but I like how it feels. It's not as squishy as the Trek's stock seat, believe it or not, but it's more comfortable from an ergonomic/pressure standpoint. (or is that sitpoint?)

My kid got to inherit the Trek's original seat for his cr@ppy Mongoose. The seat on that thing was a complete torture device. Hand-me-downs ain't so bad, since he thinks the Trek's original seat is more comfortable than the Terry. Easier on him, since his butt is thirty years younger ... and he won't be as likely to steal my bike when I'm no looking.
