![]() By Bob Jones on 3/2/2008 Need some advice. Gonna buy a new rig this year for downhill. Problem is sometimes i find myself in a situation where i may have to go up without a lift. last season i absolutly trashed my prophet at the local downhill course which is why i decided to buy something with more strength. i mainly tore up the drivetrain (3 deraileurs, two chainrings and a chain) and wheels on the prophet but all the rest is fine. well either way i'm rambling... i'm debating between KONA STINKY or STAB. i have read the stab eats up anything and everything but is good for nothing other than DH. the only thing that bothers me about the stinky is that at 170mm travel it's only 20/30mm more travel than the prophet. the prophet is a great trail bike dont get me wrong but it just didn't cut it downhill so... the 170mm travel of the stinky concerns me. although i am not a pro i do like to fly off the obstacles. so far the biggest is only about 6 or 7 feet but this year i do have plans to visit bigger parks in southern germany and in austria which will have 10+ footers waiting for me to break myself on... so does anyone have advise as to which one (STINKY or STAB) i might be happier with??? any feedback received is truly appreciated. |

Bob, I think you're right about the Stab, it's going to be rough going on the uphills, but it will take those 10' drops and ask for more. Since you seem to like Kona, have you checked out the Coilair? Although, only 165mm of travel, they are pretty sweet looking bikes, and have a new style of suspension that changes the geometry a bit when you're pedaling or going DH. Although, I think that this bike will be good at both DH and pedaling, it's not going to be amazing at either one of those things. The Rocky Mountain RMX is a pretty sweet bike. More travel at 200mm, but it's going to be a little heavy on the uphill, but they make amazing bikes. They also have the Slayer at 160mm, but it's more of an "All Mountain" bike. Let me know what you find, and what you decide on, because I think I'm looking at upgrading to the same kind of thing, but not sure if the bike you speak of is out there!!! |
