By NVMtBiker on 4/19/2008 OK, here's the deal. I'm finally upgrading to disc brakes. (yes, I know I'm way behind the curve on this one.) I opted to go with Avid BB7s for a variety of reasons, which may or may not have somehting to do with my problem. That problem is brake squeal. Now granted, I have not completely broken in or "set" the brakes yet. I have only ridden around the cul de sac a bit to try them out, and maybe this will resolve itself after a few hours of riding. What I know of disc brakes, which is somewhat limited, brake squeal is an issue for almost all disc brakes at some point. Any tips for reducing / eliminating that dreaded - and annoying - squeal? |

Disc Brake Squeal -- Avid BBs |

I know for sure that for the BB7s the 1/3 and 2/3 spacing of the rotor inside the brake is important (like you see in the directions. It does wonky things otherwise, vibration, excessive noise, etc. I love mine, they work great! MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |

ya, mine don't squeal much. few things I've learned over the years though.... 1. Does the brake squeal all the time?.. loosen it up a bit... setting the gap is kinda important ( and easy) 2. does it squeal in cornering? . crappy forks flex causing the disc to rub even when you have the gapping right, also the bearings in your wheels might be loose 3. does in squeal on a stand once in a rotation? warped rotors can be straightened with a little effort I actually use my truing stand to get them real nice! Use a screw drive and lightly flex, or I use a pair of needle nose vise grips that I dipped in rubber compound so they don't make any marks 4. do they just squeal when applying brakes? They may need brake in time , also Organic pads are MUCH quieter though a little weaker.. I find that they give me more control in light braking... oh and they wear faster but wear the rotor less. I love the BB7's :) I have seen more than once here in New England people catch a line on a branch with hydo and end up with out brakes and $$$ to repair. I have caught mine once, pulled out of the lever... slipped right back in and off I went.. did do minor damage to cable but I got home with it fine and much faster, easier, and cheaper to replace :) |
