![]() By MikeG on 12/11/2006 I was wondering: I have problems with my front derailleur jamming up when if gets muddy. Can I assume that higher end derailleurs will have less problems with muddy conditions? My current derailleurs are cheap ones, and I'm thinking of upgrading. Perhaps those members in muddy areas can help me out? I find that I cannot go uphill alot because I cannot get it into the granny gear, and it's pretty frustrating. |

Does high-end deraillers equate with better mud shedding? |

No pricey derailleurs won't be better in the mud. Bike drivetrains are not designed to ride in that much mud. They need to be slightly clean & lubed to run efficiently. Try cleaning it off and lubing the moving parts more often. Anything that has moving parts will have some stiction if you continue to ride in wet/muddy conditions. Basically, you will have to replace parts way more frequently than riders that ride when it is dry. I would stick with middle of the road derailleurs, if this is evironment you ride in. Shimano LX, XT. I know you have probably heard this before, but you shouldn't be riding in that much mud anyway... |

some times i will spit water or pour water from a bottle or hydrate to clean mud off, it works good,,but yes this does mean off the bike for trail repair.. |

spray pam on it lol just kidding but if i were you i would stick with what you got like logs says it won't be much better ,but maybe if you have a small pack thats underneith the seat then you can carry a small parts cleaner can for bikes dont buy cheapo wd40 its not really ment for bikes.thats my suggestion ? yourmtb.com rocks my socks |

Thanks guys. Just saved me a lot of trouble. I will probably just maintain the derailleurs differently, and replace when necessary. MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |
