Forks

Hi Walker-

I have been out of the suspension game for a long time, but I miss some of those rides that are only fun with a fork. So I may be in the market for one. Here's my spec:

1. Less than $400
2. Lockout
3. Durable (i.e. does not fall apart or require warranty service after a season or two)
4. Maintainable (i.e. I can change its oil and seals myself, and that's all it takes)

Those are the things that matter to me. I don't care if the lockout is remote (prefer not, actually). I don't care how much it weighs. I don't care if it has 80 or 100mm of travel. I don't care if the travel is adjustable. I don't care what color it is. I don't care if it doesn't feel like I'm riding on a dream cloud made of whipped cream and foam rubber, as long as the fork is squishier than steel and tough as nails.

Do you recommend a fork that meets those criteria?

Thanks!

Justin,

Welcome to the wonderful world of suspension!!!

I'm not sure if you've heard of the Fox brand of shocks and forks, but they are fantastically tough and smooth like creamy butter on broccoli stalks. I looked online and was surprised to see the Fox Vanilla R available for $410. It has a lockout mechanism. It is durable and you could maintain it if you wanted too. The travel distance is 100 to 130mm. I think you would find the shock to be a perfect match.

Another brand I would recommend to you is Rock Shox. The Recon 351, by Rock Shox, might be a good choice for you. It has all of the features your are looking for and it is priced under $400.

I found all of these search results on: http://www.ride-this.com

Finally, I would call your local bike shop and ask them these questions:

1. What brand of shock do they send back to the manufacturer the most?
2. What tools would I need to maintain my own shock?
3. What do they service at their shop?
4. What do other riders of my level purchase?
5. What would they recommend?

Happy Hunting!
