Going Tubeless today....

I'm taking the plunge and going tubeless today.

Thanks to the awesome Steve Outing and his many contests, I was able to buy some pricepoint gear with my winnings from the "Post your favorite Trail" contest. So, I slapped down my $20, not-so-hard-earned dollars, with an additional $50 to get the Stan's NoTubes kit shipped to the house today.

After having too many thorn flats and doing some research I decided to go tubeless with the Notubes kit to see how I like it. There were many glaring reviews on the mtbr.com site and so many of the folks kick themselves for not doing it sooner. Sure some are not happy with them due to blowouts and such but the good reviews seem to far outweigh the bad.

I called Stan's as well to make sure my tires: Kenda Nevegal Stick-E 2.35F/2.10B would work with this application. They confirmed they would work very well even though Kenda voids the warranty if you use it. They said tire pressures should be 28PSI for the rear and 25-26 in the front. They also said to NEVER inflate to over 40PSI as the tire will blow off the rim!

So we'll see. I'll do a review on installation and the first rides very soon.

Got the kit in the mail and put it in last night. Took the time to do a lot of research from their message board which was a huge help. If I hadn't read that, I would have been so frustrated with the Nevegal DTCs and their quirky sidewalls that take longer to seal than most. Anywho, after working on it for about 3 hours last night (lots of shaking and baking-stans users will no what this is) was able to get them to bubble minimally at the bead so I left them overnight. Came out this morning and the front (which I thought was totally sealed) was flat. I went ahead and aired it up and immediately located the small puncture on the sidewall. I just shook the tire up around that area and it immediately sealed! The biggest thing about this kit is READING THE INSTRUCTIONS AND WATCHING THE VIDEO BEFOREHAND. If you do that, it will work just like it says! More later.

Not yet! I finished sealing up all the little leaks last night. I have to believe the Kenda Nevegals are one of the hardest to seal with all the work I put into it. First ride was today and it was just a short test ride. The tires did seem to be much grabbier and didn't wash in the normal trails I go on. I was pushing them to see what would happen. Then on the way off the trail I purposely went through "Goatshead path" and picked up about 5 thorns just to see what happened. When I got back to the house, the front had last no pressure at 27PSI with 3 thorns so I pulled them and spun the tire and they all sealed immediately. The back had dropped to about 21PSI and I pulled those, they sealed, and I filled the tire back up. So far so good!

I'm thinking about making the transition to tubeless myself. So how many are running standard tires on UST wheels with Stan's ? I'm a XC racer and the UST are really heavy so I've always gone lightweight tire and tube combo such as the Kenda Karma's (Love them). My current set-up is the (standard) Karma tires and (UST) Bontrager Race-Lite wheelset

I've been thinking of these myself... but have a couple of questions maybe you can help with.?

one, the stuff stays liquid in the tire? does it dry to the air? does it continue to ooze out?
two, does it weight a lot? I've gone with latex tubes which are suprisingly lite
