Good MTB shoes for beginner

By rcwindell on 12/11/2007

I'm looking for a pair of clipless MTB shoes. I'm trying to pick up a pair of CrankBros Smarty pedal on eBay for cheap. Looking for shoes to go with them but there are so many choices out there. As a newer rider I still make spots that I have to walk up - there are lots of steep short hills where I ride (20yards). Whatever I get needs to have good hiking sole/traction. For athletic shoes I usually where an 11 and my feet are probably a little narrow. Any suggestions on brand/model would be great.  Price is an issue right now - if I can pick them on eBay/etc for cheap would be great. Thanks

Usually Shimano and Pearl Izumi shoes are good and work well for the price.

my only advice is avoid shimano shoes. they don't last long. other than that, just find something that fits without pinching and falls into your price range.

I've become a big fan of specialized. Ever since they started with the "metatarsal button" I find that my feet don't go numb like they used to.

I started with Pearl Izumi Vagabond's, they cost about $60.00 and have lasted 4 years. I use them with Crank Brothers Candy pedals with no problems. I finally ripped the mesh on the chain ring, but they will be great back up shoes.

haven't been here in some time so this might be to late. but you can try a few bike web sites.

JensonUSA.com
Nashbar.com
Pricepoint.com
Cambria bike outfitters

Pricepoint has lots of Combo deals where you can get shoes and pedals together at a pretty good discount.
