Hello All from Fort Campbell, KY,...Home of the Screaming Eagles.

My name is Jason Miller, I am an Army medic, new to the sport of mountain biking. I sustained a traumatic brain injury approximately 7-8 months ago and was lacking in the form of PT (Physical Training) afterwards. About 2 months ago, my doc said I could start doing some light form of PT, he said I could walk at own pace and distance or bike at own pace and distance, so I went to Wal-Mart got a bike and started pedaling. I am loving it, I bike practically everywhere I go now. Question for the masses, I have a NEXT 21 speed MTB,...GOOD?,...BAD? Whatever it's doing what I need for the most part right now. Take care you guys.

If it works for you, then great however my personal experiance with Cheap bikes..ie Canadian tire walmart bikes, they break & You'll spend more time trying to fix it then is reasonable, and fixes are more difficult on bikes with cheap/bad components.

I recommend saving up and buying from your LBS(Local Bike Shop). During the Spring and Fall Sales you can pick up bikes that will last you years, for a reasonable price($500-$1000) Another option is buying older used bikes, that were $1500 plus bikes 4 years ago.

But I am biased against 'Disposable' items, any bike that makes you enjoy riding is better then no bike.

Yeah I kinda figured that was gonna come up, but the fact of the matter is,...with a wife and 3 kids it's kinda hard to go and spend $500-$1000 on a bike that you don't have

Sorry to hear about the injury, and I send my respect for what you do. Regardless of how people feel about certain wars, soldiers are doing their job, and doing it well.

I think that for the riding you are doing, just stick with what you have. And I know how much a wife and kid can cost! hehe, mine are really expensive.

My thought is that when you are able to really get into it, after your rehabilitation, you will be so addicted to it that you will find a way to get that better bike! But until then, just get by with what you have, and put a few bucks a week into a bike jar, and in no time, you'll have enough.

Good luck on the recovery Doc.

Brandon
