Hello from Arkansas!!

I'm in Malvern Arkansas, my name is Richie, and I have three beautiful children and a great wife. I grew up with the quintessential "things that are bad for you" family. Nothing illegal, just, you know, smokers, drinkers, do-not-get-off-the-couch kind of folks. I am trying to reverse 30 years of that kind of behavior, and I will stop at nothing to become that. I am tired of having a spare tire! I was once up to 260 lbs. I am down to 215 and holding. I am trading in the 40 extra pounds of fat for muscle. Well, I'm working on that anyway.

I grew up with unhealthy behavior, and I don't want my children to have that kind of influence. The oldest of the 3 is only 3 1/2 years old. The youngest is 3 1/2 months!!!

The gear: I have a Mongoose XR-200. I know you hardcore folks out there with Treks, and high-end Gooses are probably balking. I don't blame you, but with three butts to diaper, if weren't for a cheap bike, I wouldn't have one at all. I like the bike though. It needs constant tuning, but thanks to Mongoose's fearless warranty, I can keep it going.

So far, I ride to and from work two or three times a week. It's an 18 mile round trip. And it's HILLY! With the weather being 106F for the past few weeks, I haven't been riding to work. After all, I am new to this, and I am a "clydesdale" at 215lbs. I have been going on weekend-warrior trips and riding in the evenings lately. I can't get enough of it. When I get mad, I want to ride. When I'm happy, I want to ride. When I am whatever, I want to ride.

I quit smoking 3 years ago. After starting this MTB stuff, I have power I've never felt before. I have endurance and stregth like I did when I was in high school. I sleep better. I look better. The more I ride, the easier it gets. I am not kind to myself, I could be worse, but I want to lose the lard, and I want to lose it as fast as I can. I would like to eventually get into some competitions. I have read about several here in Arkansas. Maybe I'll see some of you cats out on the trail!

Good luck dude, it sounds like you have a strong desire to be fit ,or at least live a healthier lifestyle. I'm sure that the pounds will shed fast and your new interest will quickly rub off on those around and close to you. Stick with it and good luck! O yeah, I am from Jonesboro, but haven't lived there for 16 years. Eventually I will be back in the state to enjoy retirement from the M Corps and live out the rest of my Bike riding life....

Nice to hear from a fellow Arakansan! Where are you living now? I am really noticing the benefits of riding. (Just the other day, my wife got a good look at my legs and commented that they were getting huge. That may sound strange, that just the other day she noticed my physique changing, but we have 3 children under the age of 4. Stranger things go on in my house, believe me!)

I am bummed though...I was doing so good with riding everywhere that I possibly could this week, and I was planning to ride ALL week, but then I killed my Goose. My fitness level and confidence have exceeded the operational parameters of my bike (and its warranty). I rode a narly 4-wheeler trail with some very steep but short climbs and descents. The forks are totally ragged out, and the bushings in the rear are smashed. Now it's like riding a rubber bike. EVERYTHING moves and squeaks now. When I hit the front brake, the lower section of the forks comes back about a half inch. That bike has less than 300 miles on it (I put one of those trip computers on it when I first got it).

There is hope...a friend of mine gave me a Pacific 3500 SX. I know, I know, it's STILL a Wal-Mart bike, but it's a bike. I have to frankenbike the Mongoose (what's left of it) and the Pacific bike to make one ridable bike. Tires, a few cables, chain, rear dérailleur, etc. Well, lesson learned:No more nasty trails that 4-wheelers get stuck on. Until I can afford a good bike, I need to take it easy on this one, it's got to last me at least until income tax refund time.
