![]() By MikeG on 2/6/2007 I have been considering a helmet cam. I would love to do what tedshredtrails is doing, but I just got my similar Canon camera and am worried about wrecking it. I was wondering what the minimum requirements would be for a camera setup. I've been looking at one that does VGA quality at 30 frames per second from Oregon Scientific. It seems like this fits with my budget and needs, but I could be wrong. Any comments of the above linked camera or other suggestions? |

I own the camera in question, I like it so far. I've only used it twice but it seems to work very well for the money. It is a little heavier on your head than others but it is the complete pakage where as others require a seperate cam corder. I say get it! Just make sure it is on the highest resolution and buy at least a 1 gig memory card for it, trust me. |
MikeG says:
Have you posted any videos, with your camera, on this site? I would be interested in seeing the result. MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |

I also own the camera, I think it is just ok. I have seen the quality of the vio-sport compared to the Oregon scientific and the vio-sport is a better picture. But if you take a hard crash, the monetary loss is more substantial. If you crash with the Oregon scientific camera the loss is not as great. So I guess for the money it is ok, but if you want a good quality picture the sony vio-sport that plugs into your digital camcorder is better. |
Mattgeo says:
Solid point Cory, I'm sure that the Viosport is better but it is very expensive. The video quality is good on the Oregon Scientific for the money, it is certainly not movie quality though. Mike, if you are not interested in winning any film awards and just want to see your ride go with the camera, if you happen to have plenty of money to spend look into viosport. I will post a video w/ my camera as soon as possible, most of my shots are of the trees due to trial and error w/ placement...i'm working on that. Bottom line, if you have enough money to get the Viosport get it, remember that you will need a video camera to go with it. If you just want some descent riding shots and are on a budget get the O.S. Thanks guys. Just bought a new bike, and outfitted it with new disc brakes, so the OS camera is probably the most likely candidate. MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |

I have the Tony Hawk cam. It’s a lot like this one. The biggest problem I have is the battery goes dead before the memory card is full or I stop the cam. It uses 2 AAA’s. I did try changing lens to a wide one I had from a differnet camera, It helped |
Mattgeo says:
I looked at the Tony Hawk cam also, it has 15 frames per second, the o.s. does 30 per second. Also the o.s. uses two double a's and has not ran out of juice yet and my 1 gig card is full. |

I also use the Tony Hawk Helmet Camera. Works very well for the price. AA batteries lose life in cold weather so I use rechargeables and carry an extra set. In normal weather I can fill my 1gb card on one set of AA's. Camera is light, compact and you can mount it on other places than just your helmet. I have a bunch of videos posted if you want to check out the quality. Lots of low light stuff as well - and like I said it does a decent job for price. Purchased mine off of Tigerdirect.ca Namaste. |

A suggestion for longer battery life, I use lithium batteries in all of my digital cameras. The battery life is super long and cold weather doesn't drain the batteries. Rechargeable batteries are good, but you always have to change out batteries. |

having a heck of a time trying to find a place to buy the Oregon Scientific Camera in Canada. The website shows lots of countries that have distributors but not Canada :-( Looked at Ebay, which has US sellers, and the price is not bad, but don't know what the duty will be. Retail stores seem only to be in California. ARRGH! Anybody know where else you can buy these ones? MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |
cory scott says:
They used to have them at best buy, don't know if they still carry them. I got mine off of Ebay, and got a pretty good deal. |

Mike, if your still coming to Florida let me know. I have an idea. |
MikeG says:
We're going to Florida March 10-17. What's your idea? MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |

You could send me a check, I'll put it on my debit card and (if you still want to ride with us) pick it up when you get here. I realize that this would involve trust but I would do that for you if your interested. It would be a way to skirt those unresonable duties. My girlfriend ordered me one with no issues. Just a thought. Just ride the drop..stop bieng a wussy! |
MikeG says:
I could easily order one on the website and send it to your address, and then pick it up when I get there too. That might even be easier. I'll set you up as a buddy so you can e-mail me your address. MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |
Mattgeo says:
That would work, I wasn't sure if you could do that but if you can that would work out perfect. Just make sure that they can send it in time or maybe you could pay a couple extra bucks to make it priority mail. What days in March are you coming? Just ride the drop..stop bieng a wussy! |

not sure of the schedule of our week yet. I'm also still mulling over whether to get this one or not. I'm also considering saving a bit more money to get more of a 'pro' camera. MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |

I bought the ATC 2000 to record a couple of my XC races but the unit did not work when it came so I sent it back. I learned that the cam has a 10 minute auto shut-off which wouldn't work for me anyhow. I can't just very stop and re-start evry 10 minutes during a race. I'm looking now at the type (Twent20) that records onto a personal DVR. |

Check out www.gopro.com Their Hero camera works pretty good and can take up to 54min. of video if you have a 2gb SD card in it. |

Sorry thats www.goprocamera.com |

I checked out the Hero Cam's web site and the sample vid's are very clear. I seriously might have to check this one out. It's lot's cheaper than a Twenty20 or Viosport. Does anybody have one that can give some feedback ? |
MikeG says:
I must admit that the GoPro unit sure doesn't look pretty, but it sure seems to do the job. It's clearly not a helmet cam as much as a bar mounted unit. The Oregon one looks a lot better, but if its true that it shuts off after ten minutes... MikeG Either riding or Thinking of Riding... The madness of MTB, I love it! |

I like the idea of an all-in-one in large part because I don't have a digital video recorder to plug a helmet cam into. Price is a consideration, especially if I have to buy a recorder to use it with. I picked up a Tony Hawk cam on eBay for cheap, and I hate it. I figured that with the size of video on the net, the graininess would not be much of an issue. That's mostly true, but the camera can't even keep up with a slow frame rate. Toss in the jostling it takes while mtbing, and the video is basically unwatchable. It's so bad that after a couple of trips where I tried to tweek things, I gave up and quit using it. I'll post some short clips to give you an idea of the (lack of) performance. I also did not care for the mounting system -- a rubber strap that goes around the helmet with a plate that the camera clicks into. To get the thing tight enough, you're cracking the shell of your helmet. The second option is a pad of sort of gluey stuff that is sticky enough to screw up your stickers and decals, but not sticky enough to keep the camera in place. It's virtually impossible to tell if you're recording, and there's no way to record over something until you get home and upload the video. Bottom line: This is a toy for your 7-year-old and totally useless for doing anything else with in my opinion. |
