![]() By walker on 5/8/2007 Doping keeps raising it's ugly head... Now, Ivan Basso, in a story by Bicycling.com, says he was involved in the "Operation Puerto". This is contrary to his earlier statements in which he told investigators that he had nothing to do with the Spanish doping scandal. So far, the scandal has taken the careers from Jan Ullrich, who retired this year and other up-and-coming cycling contenders. My friend, who just returned from the championships in Belgium said, "Doping is all over the place. The kids (in Belgium) wear t-shirts of known dopers. The cycling community needs to get it together. WE ALL need to stop this major problem, because more people will die." I think my friend was on to something. It isn't the authorities that will ultimately solve the doping problem. Only our peers and teammates will stop it. It is positive re-inforcement and encouragement to "do the right thing" that will win in the end. I'm just sad for Basso. He was a great rider! |
