Mt Biker Slang

By NVMtBiker on 10/16/2007

As with most cliques, mountain bikers have a language all their own -- their jargon, slang, whatever you choose to call it. It's somehting I've been thinking about lately. (Don't ask why, it's just sort of an existential discussion with myselfSome of the lingo is mostly self-explanatory, or adopted from the general population or other spor, for example: "air," "bonk," "knobbies," and "epic." Others are more esoteric and limited to MTBRs, for example: "singletrack," "O.T.B.," and "rock garden." Still more is regional or limited to other subsets, such as trials riders or downhillers.

Some of my favorites that I suspect are less-than-common:

Barney -- rocky, loose and rubbly (from Barney Rubble)(used this a lot in Arizona, quit when I had to keep explaining it to Nevadans)

Rubble -- to fall down in loose rocks / rubble

Hairball -- scary, dangerous, difficult (alternatve phrases include: abusive, hateful, no-brainer, and E-ticket)

Sock laundry -- stream or water crossing

Auger -- crash, especially head-first

J.R.A. -- just riding along

I could keep going, but the point of all this is to hear from everyong else -- What's your favorite MTB lingo? I'm espcially interested in the unusual and regional jargon.
