Night Riding Gear

I'm curious what everyone is using for their night riding. What type of setup do you have to ride at night? Where are the lights placed and what brand gear do you use? In my neck of the woods (no pun intended) most of the trails are forested, thus it gets dark fairly quick once the sun sets and there isn't a whole lot of ambient light. Even when the moon is full, the trails are hard to navigate without some sort of lighting system. I'd be curious to hear what the rest of you use to light the trails.

Thanks!

I use NightRider for my lighting system during the 24 hours of moab and 24 hours of Old Pueblo.

I wear my light on my head and nowhere else. Why? Because you look where you are going, right? Putting them on your handlebars, unless it is for back up will cause you to ride slower. That car-light illumination won't be there if you don't have lights on your head.

I've also used Light n' Motion. Very good! Very light! Very nice!

Excellent, I too mostly ride in our local woods and you're right - it gets dark v.quickly. Some pals joined me earlier this year and they were surprised just how black it was under the trees - they're used to ambient light from the moon, street lamps, etc.

I personally use a Light & Motion "ARC" HID system powered by a tiny L-ion battery. The lamp is bar mounted, near the centre to limit "bar wobble", although I'd kinda like to try the helmet mount at some point. The number of low branches and helemt strikes have put me off thus far.

This L&M system provides a useful spot for long distances and a nice gentle flood of light closer to home.

They're a bit pricey here in the UK but can be imported for big savings.

I use a night rider head trip light (it is bright but the battery charger sucks. You have to watch it closely or it damages the battery. Charge it too long, battery is damaged. Charge it too little and it dies quickly. You also have to estimate how long you used it for and recharge accordingly. Oh well, get what you pay for...).

I also have a planet bike alias mounted to my handle bars. This light is great. Tough, well built, and best of all has a smart charger. You plug it in and go. When the battery is charged it goes to a sleep mode and just keeps the battery topped off. Very nice.

Regarding lights...

Does any one out there have advice on how to aim the high and low beam on a set of lights that are on my handle bars? I've never used lights before.
