Over Maximum Travel??

By SpecializedEnduro25 on 3/16/2007

I was wondering what you think would happen if I put a pair of 170mm forks on a bike that says 160 max. Not that I plan on doing it but really what would happen? 1 Centimeter over??

I'm in the same dilema myself, just not as much travel. I'm not going to do it...

Actually I just got an update from a specialized service guy and he said that it could actually go up to 165mm. so...
Just remember...no one wants to live in a nursing home...so just do it. Cameron

shouldn't really be that big a deal. remember that when suspension forks first came out, there was no such thing as a bike that was built for travel. you're talking half an inch.

what will change is your steering. putting a taller (more travel) fork on the frame will give it a slacker head angle, which will slow down your steering slightly and make steeper downhills slightly -- probably imperceptibly -- more comfortable to ride.

a steeper head angle puts your weight more forward -- a position more suited to xc racing.

yeah, bike makers are getting more specific and more sophisticated in their suspension set-ups, and the specified fork travel is meant to match the rear suspension. will 1 cm ruin the handling? not likely. if you're riding a bike with 160 mm travel up front, frankly the extra 10mm would likely suit your riding style just fine.
