Overhaul Time?

This is a similar post to the one about Wax vs. Oil based Lubrication, but I still think it deserves another topic...

I have not yet overhauled the hubs and bottom bracket on my old bike, although I have replaced the bottom bracket, and I plan to replace the cheapo rims when they die.

I am a little more careful with regards to my new bike, however.

When am I supposed to open up these items and re-grease these. Should I be replacing bearings? I've never even opened them up before. Should this instead be done by my LBS because of expertise and tools required?

Any thoughts would be appreciated....

You should be overhauling these parts when they aren't performing smoothly or something is wrong. But a little grease to make them move more smoothly would be good every now and then. I for one would take it to your LBS, they are more experienced and can check it out and see if it needs to be overhauled or something.
