![]() By AmberLewis on 4/21/2007 During a very long bike ride, I soon discovered that my butt was very uncomfortable. My question: Should I get padded bike shorts or get a more comfortable seat? Honestly, I prefer loose shorts to spandex. Are there padded shorts that aren't spandex? |

Padde shorts or seat? |
JenNIfer says:
Hey Amber. I have baggy shorts that are padded, they have a spandex layer underneath with the pad. I like them quite a bit. I purchased them from pricepoint.com. I am sure there are better ones out there that would be better and more comfortable, but I just got cheap ones to try first, and they seem to work well enogh for the riding I do. A far as the seat, as long as there is some padding and it isn't just plastic, then it should be fine, especially if you haven't had any problems with it so far. Good Luck and Keep Riding, somehow your butt always gets used to the abuse! |

During the week of mountain bike training, I discovered the term "monkey butt" and found out why. It really doesn't matter if you use pads or special seats, a long ride will "rub you wrong." I've found that padded shorts do reduce it a little. Fox, Cannondale and Primal Wear all make padded baggie shorts which seem to work ok. Hope it helps. |

Thanks, I went ahead and bought some nice baggy padded shorts complete with removable liner and lots of pocktes. You can never have too many pockets! I also splurged and bought a jersey and socks. I may enjoy getting scrapped up and dirty, but there's no reason I can't look cute while doing it! =) |

I finally bought a pair of padded lycra shorts and wear them under some unlined baggies. Wow what a difference, the pain after a long time in the saddle was limited. No matter how many times you crash, why not look good doin it. |

A combination of both will help and there are numerous styles of padded baggy shorts available. I have some made by Oakley that are very comfortable. There is no such thing as the perfect saddle and wider is not always better. Look at some of the women's saddels by Terry and Specialized. Stew |
