Repair or Replace

At what point does one decide to replace a bike or repair it? My old bike was bought for a lot less than the money I've put into it over it's lifetime. I've been replacing parts that need to be replaced, and purposely upgrading the components as I go along.
Since my suspension fork is getting worn, I'm wondering at this point if I should change my way of thinking just get another new bike to join up with my last purchase. I would probably get a lower end bike that I would keep as a winter and mud beater.

Anyone's thought/philosophy on this issue would be helpful.

That's a good question. My general feeling is that bikes last for for 3 years after that you're adding more to them than they are worth. I've held on to bikcs for 5 - 8 years and it was a losing battle. I would say get a new bike, because there is nothing like a new bike and use the old one for a mud/winter bike...

Walker has the right idea I think...makes sense to use the old one as a junker.

I use my old one to ride to work and the new one specifically for the trail. The ther thing you could try is selling that old bike on ebay or craigslist. The money you get from that could help with the new bike purchase. Sell some of those upgraded parts for the cash.

I would get a new bike, but its mostly your call. If you think your current bike is slowing you down from advancing your preformance then upgrade, but if you dont ride too much then I would suggest keeping the old bike until your more into the sport.

There's a new twist to this thing. My wife shas shown initial interest in MTB as well. She wants to get in better shape too. So I could give her(or my kids) my hand-me-downs until she gets serious about it.

I'm crossing my fingers that this will pan out! My wife and kids are really starting to get into a summer racing series that we're doing together.

Yea that would be a great idea! Just give it to your wife or kids and see if they are into MTB, and if they are then after a while just buy them a better bike!

Thats great your family is getting into biking, I wish my were.
