riding my mtb with clipless pedals

I got my mtb in November and recently put clipless pedals on my bike.  I was feeling pretty confident before I went to clipless pedals... I even was starting to go over some of the small obsticals on the trails without falling!  I can't bunny hop and can hardly do a wheelie (just enough to be able to lift my front tire over a small log or rock)... Should I have mastered those skills before going to clipless pedals??  I've been out 3 times since I've clipped in.  The first 2 times weren't so bad.  I found myself clipping out to go over obsticles that I normally would ride over with my platforms.  The third time I got bold and daring and made it over a couple of obsticles and wrecked on some too.  It was pretty frustrating to have such a poor ride on a trail that I was starting to enjoy with my platforms.  Do you think I made the switch too soon or do I need to just hang in there a little longer?  Is there any practicing tips you can give me other than to practice clipping in and out???  Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

I did the same thing last fall-it really removed lots of my confidence. I eventually loosened the clips A LOT!! They were pretty hard to get in and out of, and I didn't know any better to loosen them that much in the beginning. Unfortunately, it's taken most of this season to get my confidence back after a couple big wrecks last fall. I hope you find a quicker way to adapt than I did!! Good Luck!

Yeah, I had the same experience. But once you get some confidence, the learning curve is straight up! The most beneficial part for me initially was pulling up on the uphill sections. You will need to tighten the clips so your feet won't come out when you pull up. Using the whole circular motion is easier on the legs than only pushing. SPD, or whatever you're using, will enhance the whole mtb experience.
