Seeking suggestions on best $3k mtn bikes for intermed rec trail rider...

By Andrew on 6/26/2007

Greetings,
I"m in the market to purchase a new mountain bike as an upgrade to my Gary Fisher Sugar 2. I'm willing to spend up to $3k. I'm seeking advice from the expert community here at yourmtb.com on 2-3 great choices for me to ride and choose from given the dizzying array of brands, categories and models. I'm a recreational trail rider, i think the category is "cross country" based on my read of what all thew new categories mean. I consider myself an intermediate. I want a lighter bike with lock-out front and rear shocks, enough travel for non-technical singletrack. Great for climbing for hours on dual track into the back country. Suggestions welcomed. I'm intrigued by the Moots Ti FS bike - i'd like to buy US made if i can. I'm concerned about carbon not being trust worthy after one crash.
thank you,
Andrew

Check out the new Gary Fischer Hi-Fi. That'll probably fit your needs. I'm also partial to Santa Cruz. Its Blur would be a good bike for you. The hot Santa Cruz is the Nomad, but that's probably overkill for your type of riding.

I'd also look at Kona's line of bikes. Ellsworth is worth considering. .. Lots of choices, you have!

yea the Gary Fisher Hi-Fi Pro (Carbon?) full susp is only 23 lbs. You'll see it inside the front cover of most recent MTB magazines. If Gary Fisher is touting carbon, I'm guessing they want it to work out. I would never buy a used carbon frame, but a new one, I would be tempted to trust it.
