Serbia Bike Trek

By markowe on 4/24/2007

Bit quiet in this forum! Just thought I would announce a trip that some friends and I are setting out on next week - six days cycling around 250 miles through the mountains of Serbia, on pretty much unmarked trails, with only the GPS to help us!

Serbia is really spectacular and I am VERY much looking forward to the adventure. It would be great to have people rooting for us on the way too, so check out my blog at: http://www.itsgottabered.com/MTB-Serbia/2007/serbia-mountain-bike-trek-2... and maybe sign up for updates so you can follow our progress.

Then maybe we can tempt some of you along next time :)

Now, that's an interesting trip! What is your route? What's the plan???

Off the road, on the mind...

We are STILL working on the route, but I have put a preliminary version up on the blog, which you can look at in Google Earth. If you tip the view over into a low-flying 3D one, you can see how it looks! Basically we are going to follow just forest and mountain trails - these are usually made by local farm or logging traffic, and our maps are quite old, so there could be some improvisation called for.

But the main idea is to enjoy the fabulous mountain and countryside on our bikes and get close to nature for a week, no noise, no pollution... Ahhhhh!!

Sounds like an awesome treip.

Don't forget the camera and many many extra batteries.

Ha, yes, I have been adding up how many batteries I need. I may get a 12v charger for the jeep, but I don't want to rely on that - we will only catch up with the car in the evening, and the lighter socket might not even work!

So let me see, that's... 4 batteries every other day for the camera, and one pair per day for the GPS... Glp!

Hey, I'm a bit late with this, but WE DID IT! We had a fantastic trip across the mountains of Serbia - it fulfilled all our expectations and pretty much went according to plan too. I did a write-up on my blog, so I won't go into detail here. But there are loads of pictures on the gallery and all I can say is if you're thinking about doing a long trek like this, go for it! It's a great chance to see the country, rough it a bit, get away from the pollution and noise, and of course, do lots of cycling!!
Serbia is just great because there are so few cyclists, no real rules about where you can ride and where you can't, and people are cool about you riding through their fields and stuff when you get lost!
I can hardly wait for our next trip!!

Cheers dude!

I am looking forward to the next exciting trip, though we've gotta settle down for a few months now and do some work :) I must admit, it's been hard getting back into "normal", everyday riding after a trip like that!
