Single speed update...

For those of you with the Singlespeed mindset, please stand up and help me understand me...

Once again, I've got to state for the record that I still cannot believe my mindset. When I recall my past beliefs on Singlespeeding, I'm shocked and amazed. Yes, I was a non-believer. I used to think, why? A singlespeed bike??? That doesn't make any sense. Now, when I go through my list of bikes to ride, I'm compelled to ride my Gary Fisher Rig. When my friends ask me to ride, I ask, "Will this be a geared ride?" What's happened to me???

I've talked to a few singlespeed riders who say, "That's just how it is, you know." And, "I hear you man, the same thing happened to me." Still further, "Yeah, it is like a strange state of mind." What is it? How can it be that ONE gear could make all the difference?

I guess you are just having the most fun on that bike. That's what it should be about after all...

just rode mine, its like your fav. hat, it just fits right. i thhink it takes the complication of anticipating shifts out of the equation making more time to focus on the ride itself rather than the details...

Something to say for that! I like your thinking here. I also feel the challenge extends into the technical side of the ballpark. Momentum, guts and grace all play a part.

walker so true.i "seem " to be able to do some technical stuff on the simple rigid i couldnt do with a suspension fork, your lines have to be more presise and gracious

Im about to head down this path (no pun intended) converting an old mtb to single speed see how it works out. Mostly for the simplicity less things to break and itll keep me from twisting on the shifter when I really have to crank on it. My thoughts tho are toward free wheel and rear brake much like the BMX I rode till I was in high school.

Keep it Single Speed: The beauty of Single Speed is you don't have to think about what gear do I have to be in for that next hill.
