Whenever there's new trail to ride in Boulder County (Colorado), that's a big deal. In this mountain bike unfriendly county -- compared to other neighboring counties where more trails are open to MTBers -- things are starting to loosen up a bit, in large part due to the lobbying efforts of the Boulder Mountainbike Alliance. This photo was taken yesterday at a volunteer trail-building event at Heil Valley Ranch, where we were building a new loop to be called the Wild Turkey Trail. A ranger told me that the trail is likely to be open to riding (and hiking and horses) next July. Bravo to BMA, which got a lot of bikers out to the event. While two-wheeled types weren't the only ones there, MTBers made up a big chunk of the 85 or so volunteers. After the work, BMA's Mike Barrow hosted a barbecue picnic and handed out free schwag (like the t-shirt I'm wearing as I type this). Bravo, BMA! Have you volunteered to build a trail lately? |
