By iDrew on 2/8/2008 On Saturday morning, the US Championship winter triathlon will be held at Mount Bachelor in Oregon. Winter triathlons differ from their traditional counterparts, as they consist of a 4 km run, a 10.5 km mountain bike ride, and an 8 km. cross-country ski. The championship, which has always taken place in Colorado, has changed locations this year an effort to raise awareness. While in countries such as Europe and South America winter triathlons have seen success, the US has long been resistant to the sport. Event organizer Jeff Dyrek told OregonLive.com that his main difficulty lies in “getting the word out that the sport even exists.” Many believe that winter triathlons require significantly more skill than the traditional ones, due to the technique required for cross country skiing, the modifications required to a mountain bike, and the difficulties of running on snow. Still others avidly embrace the sport due to the lack of swimming. One tip for mountain bikers who seek to tackle the snow: lowering tire pressure will help increase traction!
