First of all I'd like to thank Thomllama for mailing the item to me, since it did not work for his bike. What a guy, don't you think? The chainstay is tight. I don't just mean cool, but really tight to put on. I had to wrestle the thing on. When you look at it, there appears to be an end that is supposed to be for a narrower tube and a thicker end, probably for a tapered tube? The nature of the material and the amount of velcro used to apply this thing really makes it difficult to put on. I was almost about to grab two pairs of pliers and pulling it around, but thought it might tear. If I were to design this thing again, I might suggest to make the velcro wider. I suppose the material can't have much give without wreaking havoc, rubbing on things like the nearby back tire, so the lack of stretch on the material is probably a good thing. A few picture links will show you how it looked: first with the seam on the outside while I installed it, and spun around to the proper position. What really gave me the most trouble was the mentioned taper, but I still think that the item will likely stay on, and work well. I have yet to try the bike out, but I suspect that it will be nice to protect the frame, and also prevent chain slap. Perhaps I'll update this review if anything new arises... UPDATE: Tried it out, while teaching my son how to jump ramps, in front of our house yesterday. Seems to do the job, although I still hear the chain flapping around a bit after a jump. I'm sure that it will protect better than the sticker that the manufacturer puts there for protection. I also realize now that there is more than one size. I likely received the standard size, where I probably would have been better off with a larger size one. Therefore, I changed the rating from a 3 to a 4. |
Tough protector for my Smoke! [ top of page ]
As it is winter here in Edmonton, AB - Canada, I have my Sette Protector on my Kona Smoke which I am using to commute to work with. Snow, ice, slush, sand, salt and -20 degree(Celsius)temps make for a variety of conditions in which the Sette Protector has held up beautifully. Bouncing my sled through drifts and snow pack along with navigating traffic and curbs make for a unsettled ride. A+ rating from me, as it has saved my chain stay from major dingage. Thanks for the chance to test it out and keep up all the good work you guys are doing there at yourMTB.com
Chain Stay protector [ top of page ]
Well, when i first go the protector i was not too enthused. Then i went to airazona w/ it and did some drops w/ out it. I banged by chain sty up soo bad that when i got home i put it on immediately. Now my ride is almost silent. The protector has saved my bike fomr many more dings and paint chips. Over all, i would give it a 4 ouf of 5. Thanks for giving there things away guys.
not for all bikes [ top of page ]
Well, I got mine and was all happy til I went to put it on, it was to small. after posting here and no one responding I gave it to a friend.. which it worked fine for. Issues... I have to agree with twnty4jg that it needs more stretch to get snug... it seemed to roll around on his bike the little he used it. we got it tight finally just lots of tugging ( could be the size also) big thing I found... it you have a fancy chain stay (square tubing, mutliple bends, etc) instead of of just a plain round tube it probably wont conform well to your bike. Would it still work? sure. would it look cool... nope. It's plenty tough. stays on well. takes chain hits... but some good old elecical tape or handle bar tape would probably do a good job and look better.
Sette Chainstay Protector Review [ top of page ]
First off - thanks for having fun contests and giving out great prizes and equally thanks for the opportunity to test products! What a better way to find out if something works or is good than to have real riders use it! I received my protector in the mail very promptly and then could not get out on the trails - bummer! I've only done one ride, but figured I'd better post now, as my riding days, for the most part, are over for the season. So, here goes: Installation: Not too tough - just velcro's right on. Very sturdy, tough velcro, too! Good feature. One downside is that there's no 'give', no stretch to the protector, so it's not as easy to get it snuggly on there. I have a lizard skin one that stretches a bit as you put it on and it seems to give a more snug/secure fit. Protection: Seems to do the job. No chain-slap noise on long downhills. Stays firmly in place and held up well to dusty and muddy conditions on the same ride. Overall impression - cool product, worked, easy to use - I'd give it a 4. Fun to say I've got Kevlar on the bike, makes me sound so High-Tech....LOL.. Next Spring, I'll give an update, if anything changes. Thanks again for the opportunity to test! Denise
