By walker on 8/9/2006 on walker's blog If you live in the Southwest U.S., then you know that mountain biking is a year round activity (lucky us). However, at times, it requires some driving. If you live in Durango, like I do, that drive is short. Only four hours to Gallup, New Mexico, and some of the newest and most exciting mountain biking on the planet. I've been to Gallup five times this year! I have only the best reports to give back: easy camping, great 12-hour racing, lots of variety and one really good coffee shop. The other day my wish was fulfilled. My buddy Stan Smith sent me an e-mail with the following headlines: NEW TRAIL GUIDE FOR GALLUP NM! I immediately opened his e-mail and read this: "I’m announcing the release of my new trail guidebook for the Gallup NM area. "Gallup Waypoints is the title. It’s a 60 page full color book with photos, elevation profiles, and 20 detailed ride descriptions. We have good desert terrain, forested trails, and some high country smooth red-rock 'slick rock.' It, also, contains some hiking and single-speed recommendations and has a list of all my favorite Gallup restaurants to refuel. Discover all the local trail knowledge I suggest you get yourself a copy before supplies run out! With the valuable information inside this little gem, you could ride for DAYS my friend, DAYS! |
New Trail Guide for Gallup, NM

Walker, Thanks for the kind words. When I was running the bike shop and I would meet new people from surrounding areas, I would say to them: "It wasn't the night life that kept us here since '97" --although that is changing slowly, there is now Coal Street Pub making an attempt at later hours and some new local music talent (http://www.subtlegroove.com/). I'm not sure what (one) coffee shop you enjoy, but I have a hard time deciding between two of my favorites: Angela's and Gabi's Coolatte...perhaps that why I'm so wound-up...better go ride off some caffeine. |

Stan, drove through Gallup and also signed up for the Dawn til Dusk race... The trails look dry and ready to ride! What's the scoop? We should still do that podcast...??? Walker T Off the road, on the mind... |

Great guidebook! Filled with killer rides for all levels of riders. Everything from forest trails, chaparral trails, to slickrock, and almost ALL SINGLETRACK. Forget fireroads! With this guide, you won't get lost. After a phat ride, I recommend refueling on some amazing Comida Mexicana at El Metate restaurant. Have fun in Gallup! Peace. |

just read about gallup in dirtrag and thinking about driving out from Cali for the last week of March (07) - where do we stay, just bring tents and camp out? Will it be super cold, will there be anywhere to get a shower, perhaps at one of the fine coffee establishments? |

Also, if you're into mellow sport climbing, bring a rope! You can climb near the high desert trail system!!! Walker T Off the road, on the mind... |

I'm headed up to Gallup from Phoenix this coming weekend (Memorial Day). I bought the guidebook in Flagstaff and I am stoked! I've known about the riding in Gallup for about a year, but I keep going to Bootleg Canyon in Nevada during long weekends. I'm not really a downhiller (I ride a cross-country rig, hardtail), so this trip promises to be right up my alley. The guidebook looks fantastic! I can't wait to get there. Installed new brake pads tonight, so I'm ready to roll! |

Back from Gallup. Freakin' awesome! We only had time for 2 rides. We did Dawn till Dusk when we got there on Saturday. That ride is definitely classic! Every single segment of the ride was ridiculously fun! On Sunday we did the Red Rocks ride. I was hoping to link it up with the Surfin' the Rincon ride, but I didn't really understand the map in the guidebook. Even with GPS, I wasn't seeing the features that the map showed. But it is a new area to me, so I'll learn. The beginning of this ride was amazing: ripping downhill on tight singletrack through aspens and pine trees! Far back on the slick rock, we found a fun to place to play for a while, with small bowls and jumps. We stayed here almost all day! We also met Stan's wife out there. Very nice lady! Monday we went to Mentmore to go rock climbing. It wasn't as fun as the riding, but it was still pretty good. |
