Overhaul Time?

This is a similar post to the one about Wax vs. Oil based Lubrication, but I still think it deserves another topic...

I have not yet overhauled the hubs and bottom bracket on my old bike, although I have replaced the bottom bracket, and I plan to replace the cheapo rims when they die.

I am a little more careful with regards to my new bike, however.

When am I supposed to open up these items and re-grease these. Should I be replacing bearings? I've never even opened them up before. Should this instead be done by my LBS because of expertise and tools required?

Any thoughts would be appreciated....
