|
By fang_x on 10/2/2007 i am new to mountain biking, i purchased a somewhat older mountain bike, a giant Ac1 from 2001, for a pretty good price. any how it has marzocchi z1 drop off front suspension and stock rear suspension, as i am new to this can someone give me step by step instructions on how to maintain the bike. i know the basics like how to adjust the derialuers and tighten the bolts ^_^. but for the suspension is there any special things i should be looking for the maintenance of it?

Don't be lazy: Dial in your suspension
|
By Steve Outing on 10/1/2007 on Steve Outing's blog Yeah, I admit to being lazy when it comes to keeping my bike in tune -- specifically my suspension. Went on a ride the other afternoon and the bike (my Blur LT) felt like crap. I guess it had been a while since I tweaked the suspension settings, and it'd gotten far enough out of whack that I really noticed it. The next morning I spent some time with the bike and properly dialed in front and rear suspension, including adding a few pounds of air to the rear shock which had gotten too low. What a difference! |
Overhaul Time?
![]() By MikeG on 5/15/2007 This is a similar post to the one about Wax vs. Oil based Lubrication, but I still think it deserves another topic... I have not yet overhauled the hubs and bottom bracket on my old bike, although I have replaced the bottom bracket, and I plan to replace the cheapo rims when they die. I am a little more careful with regards to my new bike, however. When am I supposed to open up these items and re-grease these. Should I be replacing bearings? I've never even opened them up before. Should this instead be done by my LBS because of expertise and tools required? Any thoughts would be appreciated.... |
Cleanliness is next to godliness...

By Corporal Punishment on 3/13/2007 on Corporal Punishment's blog This weekend I got to get out and get a good ride in with Sarge and his daughter. We had a great ride up at Ashland up and around the park. Just about everybody we ran into were very friendly and for the most part, the dogs off their leashes stayed away from us. It was Sarge’s daughter’s first ride after a couple of months as well as her first ride up Ashland. It was clear, beautiful and about 70 degrees. I heard a lot of squeaking, grinding and dragging of various components on my bike. Unlike Sarge, who is very meticulous / anal about bike cleanliness, I tend to wipe it off and throw the bike in the garage during the winter months. I just really don’t feel like washing during the cold. Well, I put the Prophet on the bike stand and went to town on it. I took a brass brush to the chain to clean off some spot rust that developed. I ran a brush around the rear derailleur and through all of the different cogs and grooves. My ride seemed to breathe a fresh sigh of relief. |
Mountain bike maintenance 101
|
By walker on 4/11/2006 on walker's blog Dprimo sent me this question: "I am interested in the 101 on how to maintain my bike. I am talking about a very simple tutorial on the most basic elements of keeping the bike trail-ready. I'm looking for the basic tool requirements, the basic goo requirements and maybe a list of the top 5 things that will go wrong with my bike and how to address them." I've got some answers for him, which I've answered in the Forum area. Get over there now! |
