Does high-end deraillers equate with better mud shedding?

<em>MikeG</em>'s picture
By MikeG on 12/11/2006

I was wondering: I have problems with my front derailleur jamming up when if gets muddy. Can I assume that higher end derailleurs will have less problems with muddy conditions? My current derailleurs are cheap ones, and I'm thinking of upgrading. Perhaps those members in muddy areas can help me out?

I find that I cannot go uphill alot because I cannot get it into the granny gear, and it's pretty frustrating.

Problems with cold weather riding

Frozen mud on Cog

Today I went riding solo. My buddy Jimmy was busy with work, something about invoicing for his business. We usually go on Saturday morning, but it was really windy and rainy.

I set out at 5 AM because I have a busy day, including going to church. So I figured I would get an early start to get a good ride in.

Today was good. I tried out my lights with great success. It is really cool riding in the dark. A helmet light would be a good future addition, so that I can look around corners before my bike turns around.

I came across a 'puddle' measuring about 5 feet across and about 40 feet long and fairly deep. it had a thin layer of ice on top that I easily broke through. I think that is where my problems started...

Flat Tire Syndrome,Cross-Training, sore, odo at 1000

By MikeG on 11/24/2006 on MikeG's blog

Last Saturday was a good ride. I'm writing this later because I'm busy with a side job at night to make a little extra cash (for MTB stuff of course!).

We had quite a ride because it was muddy. It had been raining all week. At least if it is really cold, then the mud is frozen, but not this week.

Even though I experienced a lot of muddy sections, I still managed to do well, since I had been working on shifting my weight to the back. It really works well to avoid spinning the back tire. This has made my climbing, even in muddy conditions, go amazingly well.

Today I really showed my stuff to the other guys. There were sections where I was surprised that I didn't have to get off and do some 'cross-training' as we like to call it. In fact, when the other guys headed for the road to go home, I went on to do a total of 40km. This includes about 12km from my home, to the trails and back.

Mud Man 2

Mud Man 2

Here is a picture after a nice long ride yesterday. It was so good I went 45km.
I think this is close to the muddiest I've ever gotten. Somehow the picture never does it enough justice!

My friend Derrick showed up Sunday morning at the trailhead with his bike looking like this -- mud from a ride 2 weeks ago.

Crested Butte mud bath

Crested Butte mud bath

My legs after getting a mud treatment along the Dyke Trail near Crested Butte, Colorado. Spectacular trail, by the way, even if it is usually wet because the area gets so much rain in the summer.
