First time to Moab & first ride, I did a group ride, it was a bit wierd, in the van ride up, everyone was chattering about how hard it is, maybe we should turn back now. I was wondering what I had gotten myself into. Well, the same chatterboxes were the ones at the back of the pack. The climb was fun, technical but not too difficult. The downhill was amazing. Lots of fun, awesome views. It took us longer than it should have, but we were stopping for picutres, fixed a couple of pinch-flats, waiting for the group. The singletrack at last 2 miles, had a bit of hike-a-bike, steep drops, but I never felt like I'd drop off the edge or anything. Awesome trail. |

| "Porky" is touted as one of the best MTB trails in the US (actually, the world), and who I am to argue. Every trip to Moab, my buddies and I devote one day to riding Porcupine Rim. It's so fun and scenic, I'm happy to be a repeat customer. Of course, Porky did result in a fractured left index finger on a trip a couple years ago, but that was my stupidity and not the trail's fault. This particular version of the trail involves a cushy van ride to the starting point at Upper Porcupine Rim. That trail travels along the cliff edge (incredible views and very fun singletrack) before reaching the famous overlook where crowds always form and the jeep track comes up from the south. Most folks park further down at the parking lot on Sand Flats Road and then take doubletrack up to the overlook. (The more ambitious will cycle up from Moab and do a big loop.) But for a not super strenuous tour of Porcupine Rim, this is a great and fun route. |
