Winter Riding

By BrandonST on 1/8/2008 on BrandonST's blog

Last post, I talked about it getting darker so much earlier...well, I've had something a little more troublesome to contend with lately...snow. Living in Canada, we're pretty much guaranteed to have 5 good months of miserable weather, from muddy to snowy, then back to muddy again. Right now, I'm in the snowy stage. I went out and bought myself a studded tire, some proper gloves, put on my snowmobile boots, and off I went, hyperactive dog in tow.

Darkness Approaches

By BrandonST on 9/27/2007 on BrandonST's blog

Well, that time is almost upon us. The days are slowly shortening, and will soon be lost, spent looking out from a soul-less cubicle, through a dingy window.

I have recently started a new job, one that doesn't allow for much flexibility, which means, it doesn't allow for much riding...I haven't been out in weeks, and it's killing me! Within a few weeks, I will head to work in the dark, and head home in the dark; what a depressing thought.

rolling on the river

Thom

So when it is freezing out and there is too much snow out on the trails to ride, what is a mountain biker to do? Ride on a frozen river of course! On Monday my buddy and I went up to Algonquin IL, to see another buddy and ride the Fox River. We were up there early in the morning and river was frozen solid, or at least 10 to 12 inches thick. We started of the ride by jumping off the dock into some think powder. As we rode on we found that the best way to move was to follow in the snow mobile tracks. After the 2 plus miles to the end of the river in downtown Algonquin where the damn was we stopped for an hour to eat some lunch and regain some power in out legs.

Sick of Hibernation

Oh, The Good Life.

OK, now I don't know how the rest of the country is right now, but I am a little sick of waiting for the snow to melt away. Here in the mid-west we are usually blessed with somewhat of a milder winter. Temperatures kind of are on the cold side, but I can deal with that. What I am talking about is the 4-5 inches of snow once a week in combination with our sub-zero temperatures. I love to ride, but not in my basement on my trainer, and I am sick of the gym. I miss the single track. I am very eager to get back on the trails, and here in Nebraska we not only have to wait for the thaw. We have to wait for the drying of the trails, so as not to destroy the weird soil we have here.
